About Ian Mackinnon Ian was an interesting bloke and over the years since we met in September 1971 I got to know him pretty well. I was asked if I could jot down a few things about him and this is what I came up with. He was interested in so many things which definitely did not include :- Foreigners The Ballet Opera The Conservative Party Christmas He vehemently disliked:- Some members of the Conservative Party. People who talk loudly into mobile phones in public places. Power boaters who never look behind them and so fail to see the chaos they generate for small yachts to cope with. The people responsible for privatising the railways thus, enabling timetablers to ensure that the traveller alighting at Winchester to catch the1734 connection to Waterloo is always greeted by the sight of its rear light disappearing rapidly in an easterly direction. (we'd never hear the last of that one) He enjoyed a multitude of things including:- The natural world. Flying light aircraft and all aviation related things. He was a "spotter" from childhood and an expert identifier of all aircraft types, particularly British. He loved:- British birds. British wild flowers. Women, of any nationality. He enjoyed:- Sailing his boat. Pop music, but only up to the 1970s. Steam locomotives. Drinking "proper" Beer, although not so much lately. Left wing politics, but not so far left as Corbyn. BBC radio comedy programs, especially Beyond our Ken, Round the Horne, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and others of that era. Traditionally built wooden boats. Arguing with me. Making things, for example, his conversion of an agricultural trailer into a Shepherds Hut, still to be seen on the Isle of Wight. Spending Christmas Day at home with a bit of chicken watching "The Battle of the River Plate" on the television. But above all he liked to be in the company of his friends, a few drinks, re-telling favourite tales, a good Indian meal and laughing a lot. He and I have been friends for over fifty years. Trained and worked together, sailed and flown together, had too many drinks, shared many confidences and I, like everybody here, will miss him.

Today we say goodbye to my amazing Uncle Ian. My love of nature and wildlife came from him. I was incredibly lucky to have him in my life, from walks in the woods, and looking at the stars to sailing on his boat and even flying his plane as a child he gave me so many amazing experiences and memories. Thank you Uncle Ian, I will forever look up at a plane in the sky and wonder if it's you 💔🛩️🌳🛥️🌺🌷
